Kevin Johnson To Ride Both Classes at Las Vegas & SLC Race Report
5/3/2002

Hi fans, SLC was a little different
than I anticipated but I was all good.
The weekend started out with a
little bit of a controversy. The AMA
decided to cancel practice on Friday due to the rain. However it never rained.
For some reason they cancelled because rain was forecasted for the
area. Well most of the riders, including
myself were not that happy about this turn of events. The rain eventually came around 9 PM which meant we could’ve had
practice.
The next morning it was still
raining and practice was postponed. Finally
at 4 PM we were able to get one ten-minute practice. That’s it, just ten minutes for a national Supercross race. On the good side it finally stopped raining
and it looked we wouldn’t have to race in the rain. Since the track was covered the whole night it turned out fairly
good for the evening races.
There were no day qualifiers due to
the lack of people entered in the 125 class.
In my heat race I got a bad start and only made it to 11th. The track was really soft and getting a lot of
deep ruts. It was slippery under the
soft stuff so it was hard to get traction.
In the last chance, Isaiah
Johnson, my cousin, got the
holeshot. I ran down to the corner in
second. It took me a few laps but I finally
passed for the lead and won the race.
In the main I got an awesome jump
off the line and headed to the first corner with a good start. But since I came from the last chance
qualifier I was way on the outside and just got pinched off at the corner. I tried to run around the outside but there
was just no room. I ran into some
people and ended up almost crashing. I
left the first turn in last and it took me a while to get it going. After I got into my rhythm I made it up to
14th. Not a bad run for a the most one
lined track of the year.
I am excited for Vegas. I am going to race in both the 125 and the 250
classes. It should be fun and hopefully
get really dry because that is how my track is all the time. We will see how I can do on my 426.
